Lose yourself

Marshall Bruce Mathers III es el verdadero nombre del autor de la canción que nos ocupa hoy.

Poco después de nacer, su padre abandonó a su familia, con lo que Marshall Mathers pasó la mayor parte de su niñez con su madre entre Kansas y los suburbios de Detroit.

Interesado en el hip hop desde una temprana edad, enseguida se encontró rapeando bajo el seudónimo de "M&M". De ahí proviene el nombre artístico por el que es conocido, las iniciales de su nombre que usara en estos comienzos, evolucionarían para convertirse en el "Eminem" por el que se le conoce ahora.

Eminem también es conocido como Slim Shady, su alter ego, un personaje que se le ocurrió a Eminem cuando estaba en el baño.

Eminem fue descubierto por Dr. Dre, Eminem ha declarado en varias ocasiones que Dr. Dre le salvó la vida, porque antes de tener un contrato discográfico seguro, su vida era muy inestable, llegando incluso a considerar el suicidio como salida.

Eminem es conocido por ser uno de los pocos raperos blancos que ha alcanzado el éxito, también es uno de los más criticados. Las letras de sus canciones son controvertidas, bastante sarcásticas, de contenidos crudos y muy violentas.

En 2002 apareció la película "8 Millas", protagonizada por Eminem, en la que interpreta a Jimmy "B-Rabbit" Smith, un rapero que vive con su madre en una caravana en los suburbios de Detroit. El nombre de la película hace referencia al hito kilométrico de 8 millas desde el centro de la ciudad, los suburbios.

Se trata de una historia que podría acercarse, salvando las distancias, a la historia del propio Marshall Mathers.

La canción de hoy, "Lose Yourself", pertenece a la banda sonora de esta película.

La canción cuenta la misma historia que la película, centrándose en el mensaje de que la oportunidad aparece una vez en la vida, ¿vas a dejarla escapar?.

El vídeo musical por tanto se acompaña de imágenes de la película.

"Lose Yourself" es considerada la canción insignia de Eminem, y es también su sencillo de mayor éxito.

Con esta canción fue nominado al Óscar a la mejor canción en el 2002, premio que se llevaría ganando a otros candidatos como "The Hands That Built America" de U2 por la película "Gangs of New York", que parecía la favorita a priori.

Eminem no fue a la gala de los Óscar porque creía que no iba a ganar el Óscar y porque no quería ir de traje a la ceremonia, tanto él como su manager creían que hubiera sido una mala decisión para la imagen de Eminem, porque significaría que vendía su imagen a Hollywood. Pero finalmente ganó.

Generalmente no me gusta el hip hop en ninguna de sus vertientes, pero esta canción tiene algo, es distinta; genial.
