Boulevard of broken dreams

"Boulevard of Broken Dreams" es la cuarta canción de "American Idiot", séptimo disco de Green Day.

American Idiot es otro disco conceptual en el que a través de la consecución de las canciones se va contando una historia general. Pretendía ser una ópera punk rock, similar a otros álbumes como The Wall de Pink Floyd que ya comenté en su día.
Con este disco, Green Day volvieron a la popularidad y al éxito comercial que habían perdido con sus trabajos anteriores, alcanzando sus singles una aceptación que no tenían desde Dookie.

Al poco tiempo de salir a la luz el disco, se empezó a barajar la posibilidad de llevar la idea conceptual del disco al cine en una película.

En "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" se habla de la soledad que sufre Jesús, el protagonista de la historia del disco; de cómo se siente solo, camina solo entre la gente sin nadie con quien compartir los momentos, como caminando por calles vacías.
Todo en un todo y con una letra un tanto depresiva, haciendo referencia al bulevar de los sueños rotos.

Tanto la canción como su correspondiente vídeo musical han recibido varios premios.

Losing my religion

"Losing my Religion" es la segunda canción de "Out of Time", séptimo disco de estudio de la banda R.E.M.

Es considerada la canción más famosa de R.E.M. y la que les dio reconocimiento mundial.

La canción está construida alrededor de la música de la guitarra acústica y la mandolina, sonidos poco familiares, lo que hizo que Michael Stipe la definiera como un "freak hit".

"Loosing my Religion" es también una expresión muy usada en el sur de Estados Unidos y significa perder el control.
Como decía Michael Stipe, quería componer una canción sobre una obsesión clásica, y eso es lo que hizo.

El vídeo musical, dirigido por Tarsem Singh, aunque fue bastante criticado por las diversas imágenes de distintas religiones que contenía, fue denominado como el vídeo del año (entre otros premios).

Se trata de una canción que ha sido versionada en varias ocasiones, existiendo las versiones de Abigail, Tori Amos, Graveworm, Preluders..., incluso de nuevo, Weird Al Yankovic.

Lateralus

Lateralus es el tercer disco del grupo norteamericano Tool. A su vez, Lateralus es la novena canción dentro de este álbum, de las trece de que está compuesto.

La canción compara la vida a una espiral, constantemente creciendo y expandiéndose dando vueltas.

Pero lo más peculiar es otra cosa...
Hagamos una pausa para presentar un par de conceptos relacionados con las espirales.
En primer lugar tenemos el número áureo (Φ = 1,618033), se trata de un número que representa una relación o proporción en lugar de una unidad en si. Más información...
También tenemos la conocida sucesión de Fibonacci, que es una sucesión numérica en la que, partiendo del 'cero' como primer elemento y del 'uno' como segundo elemento, cada elemento es igual a la suma de los dos anteriores. Más información...
Matemáticamente la sucesión se representaría de la forma:
F(0) = 0
F(1) = 1
F(n) = F(n-1) + F(n-2) para n >= 2
Lo cual produce la serie:
0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34,55,89,144,233,377,610,987...

Se puede apreciar a simple vista la relación de estos conceptos con una espiral:



Pues bien, todo el disco cuenta con una cualidad técnica que lo hace estar un peldaño por encima. Mientras otros grupos se limitan a componer un número de canciones con las que llenar un disco, Tool en Lateralus han compuesto un álbum basado en la sucesión de Fibonacci.

Lo primero que se intuye al oír el disco es que el orden de las canciones no es el "correcto".
Si dividimos el número de canciones del disco, trece, entre dos, nos da 6.5 como punto intermedio, siendo "Parabol" la sexta canción y "Parabola" la séptima, y caracterizándose por no tener corte sonoro entre ellas, con lo que tendríamos un punto de partida para empezar la espiral.
En el propio tema "Parabol", la batería sigue un ritmo curioso, si, exacto, la sucesión de Fibonacci, marcando los números hasta el trece una y otra vez... 1,1,2,3,5,8,13,1,1,2,3,...

Es fácil percibir como "Parabola" acaba de forma que encaja perfectamente con el inicio de la quinta pista "Schism". Se puede ver un nuevo orden de las canciones:
6,7,5,8,4,9,3,10,2,11,1,12,13. A este orden se le ha llamado "The Lateralus Prophecy".
No obstante con todo esto, en el tema eje del disco, Lateralus, también nos encontramos con la ruptura de la espiral ("Spiral out, keep going.").
Esta pista en la letra va acompañada con que se corta la secuencia de Fibonacci en 13 y vuelve a 1, de esta manera una nueva espiral queda formada 6,7,5,8,4,9,13,1,12,2,11,3,10. A este orden se le ha llamado "The Holy Gift".
Otros simplemente sugieren ordenar las canciones según la serie de Fibonacci: 1,2,3,5,8,13,4,6,7,9,10,11,12; esta ordenación se conoce como "The Fibonacci Sequence".

Cuando llegamos a la canción "Laceralus", lo primero que se puede apreciar es que la voz del cantante entra en el minuto 1:37 de la canción, lo que equivale a 1,617, valor aproximado del número áureo.
Los tiempos de esta canción van variando entre 9/8, 8/8 y 7/8, con lo que originariamente la canción se iba a haber llamado "9-8-7". No obstante 987 es el décimo séptimo número de la sucesión de Fibonacci.

Y, si nos fijamos en cómo el cantante va cantando las distintas frases haciendo pausas, podremos ver cómo los distintos segmentos que canta tienen unas longitudes en sílabas que van siguiendo la sucesión de Fibonacci, primero ascendiendo y luego volviendo atrás:

A parte de las referencias a espirales dentro de la propia letra.

Siempre se relacionó la espiral de Fibonacci con el origen de la vida y ciertos fenómenos de la naturaleza.

No sólo se puede ser creativo con la música o la letra de una canción o de todo un disco y en esta obra de 'ingeniería musical' (de la cual este comentario muestra sólo parte de su contenido) hay todo un derroche. Pocos discos se pueden encontrar con una elaboración tan meritoria y bien merece quitarse el sombrero y reconocérselo, y una extensa entrada en este humilde blog.

Zombie

Hoy le ha tocado el turno a Zombie, uno de los mayores éxitos de la banda irlandesa "The Cranberries" y una de las canciones que más popularidad dió al grupo.

Zombie es la cuarta canción del segundo disco de estudio de la banda, "No Need to Argue".

Se trata de una canción protesta en contra del conflicto de Irlanda del Norte, haciendo referencia a la rebelión militar de Irlanda por su independencia en 1916.
La canción fue escrita por Dolores O'Riordan durante la gira que The Cranberries hizo por Inglaterra en 1993, en memoria de dos niños que fueron asesinados por una bomba del IRA.

No hay que destacar nada más del significado de la letra. La canción se sirve de un sonido más fuerte del habitual en la banda acompañando a la habitual y tan característica interpretación vocal de Dolores O'Riordan.

Como nota curiosa, las imágenes de los soldados ingleses en Irlanda que aparecen en el video musical, fueron tomadas con la escusa de filmar un documental sobre el día a día en las operaciones militares.

También existen versiones de esta canción, como la de Miser, o la de Breed 77.

Entre la letra de la canción he dejado los 'hey', los 'dou', los 'oh'... que la cantante utiliza como si se tratara de otro instrumento más con el que tocar la canción.
