I'd do anything for love (but I won’t do that)

Hoy también volvemos unos años atrás con esta canción, y con Michael Lee Aday, conocido artísticamente como Meat Loaf (pedazo de carne), apodo que le viene desde su infancia y sus problemas de obesidad.

La carrera de Meat Loaf ha sido a lo largo del tiempo un tanto irregular, con periodos de mucha actividad y periodos de descanso, que ha ido compaginando con su faceta de actor.

Lo que es seguro es lo que ha supuesto Meat Loaf para la música, estando su nombre íntimamente ligado al de la Ópera Rock.

"I'd do anything for love" es la primera canción del disco "Bat out of Hell II: Back into Hell" de Meat Loaf.

Se trata sin duda de la canción más exitosa de Meat Loaf. Compuesta y producida por Jim Steinman, es una canción bastante larga, durando 12 minutos, que se quedarían recortados a unos 7 minutos y medio en el vídeo musical, dirigido por Michael Bay.

Se trata de una balada en la que expresa todo lo que sería capaz de hacer por amor. A lo largo de la canción va repitiendo que haría cualquier cosa por amor ("I would do anything for love"), y lo va intercalando con "I won't do that" para referirse a algo que no haría.

Este "that" es un tanto ambiguo, y a lo largo de los años ha sido una pregunta frecuente: ¿Qué es "that"?, ¿Qué es lo que no haría?.

Sin embargo la canción es auto explicativa, ya que antes de cada "I won't do that" hay algún verso contando algo que no haría y que es a lo que se refiere ese "that": "I'll never lie to you and that's a fact", "I'll never forget the way you feel right now", "I'll never stop dreaming of you every night of my life"…

El vídeo musical le da a la canción un aire a La Bella y la Bestia, o al Jorobado de Notre Dame.

Una canción peculiar, capaz de ganar un Grammy y alcanzar las primeras posiciones en las listas de unos cuantos países, y sin embargo también aparecer en listas de peores canciones. Que cada uno juzgue por si mismo.

Pongo la letra de la versión de siete minutos y medio, que es la del vídeo. La versión original del disco sólo añade alguna estrofa más que van en la misma línea que el resto de la canción.
